Mayors & Councillors

In 1921 the Municipality of Smithfield and Fairfield (which had existed since 1889) was officially gazetted as the Municipality of Fairfield.

Later, in 1949, the Municipality of Cabramatta and Canley Vale amalgamated with the Municipality of Fairfield to become one council.

Local Studies volunteer Margaret Goodridge, herself a descendant of two of our early mayors, has been researching the history of the the Mayors and Councillors of the Fairfield District. Fairfield City Library has now commissioned a local author, Bev Donald, to write an official history of our Mayors and Councillors, building on this research.

While the lives of some of our early aldermen were quite well documented, there are others about whom very little is known. Local Studies is keen to find out what other information may exist about these people, including photos and images, so we invite you to comment* about any of the people listed below and tell us what you know or who we should be talking to!

*All comments will be moderated and no personal details will be published.

Dad’s photo which was up on the wall in the Mayoral Gallery at the Fairfield Council Chambers, has possibly been archived somewhere as it is over 40 years ago. He died in September 1992.

  8. Re: Henry Alfred Clancy (1929-31). I am his great grand daughter, my grandmother Irene Joyce-Brandon nee Clancy was his eldest child. His second daughter, Vida Santoro, has a son and daughter in Victoria. His third daughter, Pearl Killinger, has children in Queensland and NSW. There is a possibility of a photo though I haven’t found one yet. There are stories about him which I can provide. He had a very varied career – and ended up a property developer in the area – He was an unassisted migrant from Yorkshire. b.1874 and started off in Queensland, where he was a policeman then went down to Victoria, then back up to Queensland. There are similarities with Clancy of the overflow.
